We have a no smoking policy in our home, implemented on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking practically continually when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of individuals who walk past your home. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat.
