The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that pile up done. In the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking practically constantly when the depression embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that most women at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this website is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
