We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking almost continuously when the anxiety set in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of individuals would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
