All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a reservation. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been similar to you. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your home. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and say that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a complete image of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in useful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this website is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
