All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to finish with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. In the 3rd week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking almost continually when the anxiety embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that most women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of it all. I think it's time I provided you a total picture of our street and individuals who live on it. It will be available in useful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her partner and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never spoke with him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
