We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to make with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I could stroll, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes throughout the street. I began to select up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your home. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that many ladies in the house do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. It will can be found in useful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her other half and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and father Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never spoke with him, even though what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
